Beta v0.90 available now!

Wednesday, October 23, 2013 by Island Dog | Discussion: Press Releases (WC)

The Start screen in Windows 8 organizes your applications into groups of tiles. Launch8 adds the convenience of a quick access stationary dock on your Start screen. Now you’ll be able to drag and drop your favorite applications into Launch8 and quickly launch them no matter where you have swiped to on your Start menu.

Launch8 v0.90 beta is available to try as a free 30-day trial and can be purchased for only $4.99.

Purchase Launch8 today to get access to the beta now and receive a free update to the final version when it releases this Fall.

Visit Windows 8 Start screen dock to learn more.

Check out some screenshots below:

Got it!  It is nice, not sure of the purpose, since all the apps on the PC are already on the metro start page, but it is nice.

Maybe the jumplists will be handy. Is there anything more to it? Am I missing something?

What would you like it to do?

Well, I don't know, something that isn't already there?  The clock and the jumplists is all I see that wasn't already there.

I'm not complaining, just wondering the benefits.

Replace those ugly assed tiles with High Definition icons.

Novel, and I'll kick its tires.

Can you skin it?

If no then why? Is SD shifting the business model to utilities and games?

Other than the jump list feature and the clock it isn't going to be a real time saver if you have your tiles in nice logical groupings.

We added skinning recently to Start8 and I imagine the decision on making this one skinnable will somewhat depend on the reaction to that,

Yeah but their is a HUGE difference between the 2. My feelings on Start8 are no secret and I won't repeat them here.

This app provides a more logical interface to the native environment. Its long term potential is much better.

Um.. unless I'm blind I saw no option to turn it off in the settings. Once it's on, it's on with no option to hide/turn off?

To be honest, it's hard to see a real benefit for this app. If you fancy an "old style" row of small icons and you for some weird reason need to have ton of tiles, you could just make your tiles 1x1 and need to scroll would go away. It's not like all the apps are or need to be at the start screen.

More interesting app would be a hack, that would stuck-pin a tile group to the left of the screen when scrolling right. That way you would still get the benefit and looks of the tiles without loosing one click access.

Running win 8.1 with WindowBlinds8, Start8, ModernMix and Decor8. No problems so far. I basically run off the desktop because I need to monitor and have access to the taskbar and system tray. The app I need would put the taskbar/system tray on the start screen. Another useful app would allow a desktop app to send you back to the start screen when it closes. With these two you'd have the best of both worlds so I'm sure there is some reason it won't work.

Like most of the more recent apps there is no explicit option to unload them because they are typically expected to be used always.

If you do not want it to auto start then you can set the service to off and manually run launch8.exe when you want it.  You should also be able to unload it via launch8 UNLOAD.

I tried it and it just did not add any real functionality as far as productivity go's. What would be nice is to be able to use 3D Tiles in the start menu. That would not be productive ether but it sure would look good.

This is just my opinion. But I do think the 3D tiles would be a hit after all this is a skinning lot.

Um... 2 entirely different apps with entirely different functions. Why would it replace Decor8?

I know you are going to think I am crazy...but I'd like to have the shortcut in BOTH places. In the shortcut dock, and the metro screen.

I havent tried the software, so correct me if I am wrong, but as of now you can only have it in one place, but not both, right?!

Is there a way to achieve that?

Thanks.

(Will renew my Object Desktop Subscription when the 1.0 gets released I guess. I need my Win8.1 updates anyways.)

EDIT: I don't mean always. Just as an option. Like every icon/shorcut you drag you have the option of it been duplicated, or "deleted" from the original location after it's been mobed.)

You can have shortcuts in both places.  Adding to launch8 does not remove from the start screen.

Sorry if this has already been asked....will this be part of Object Desktop when the final version is released or will it be a stand alone product?
