Ratings

bunch of crud

Monday, October 18, 2010 by jazzilady | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Hi all,

I haven't posted in the forum for quite some time now, but something or someone has been bothering me for quite a while now. People work hard to create the walls they submit! I know mine haven't met the approval of a few people, but I do work hard at them. It's unfair that someone has been rating walls way down and not even commenting on them. What kind of a clown does that? Are they so chicken that they can't even lay claim to their spiteful ways? I'm tired of it!

As I said, there are a few people who are not satisfied with anything I do, be that as it may, don't just rate low and not explain why you did it! Only losers do that!

JazziLady. I am a big fan of yours and I would never rate your walls low. They're too damn good for that. As for whoever is doing it all I can say is that person wouldn't know quality if it got up and bit him/her in the ass. You're one of my favorites love. Rock on!

BTW ... #'s don't lie.

The curse of the drive-by rating rears it's ugly head again.

Uvah, that's the nicest sweetest thing I've heard in a very long time! I know you would never do that, you always leave wonderful reviews for me! I am so grateful for that too. Thanks Uvah!

Yes Wizard! they are back at it again! Not just my work either, others have been hit by the drive by!

Jazz not much to say as Uvah said it all. Will add this to the mix. If I find things that aren't to my taste I don't give them a low rating I just don't rate it. Not everything made is for everyone but that doesn't mean the person didn't work hard to make it because for anyone that does this stuff it all takes time and work. So please don't worry about it and the person(s) doing this stuff will go away. You should be proud of your work so keep it up.

It's unfair that someone has been rating walls way down

Just took a look at your gallery, last 48 walls. There are 6 of 48 rated 2 stars or lower, 5 of 48 rated 4 stars or higher, that means the rest are 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 stars.

I see nothing there that indicates anyone is rating your walls low. Remember since you are a journeyman the starting rating of three stars is just a placeholder. When the first person to rate it rates at say 2 1/2 stars, that becomes the rating. It is not averaged with the 3 star placeholder.

When another rates it then the ratings start being averaged.

Discussions like this are usually best handled in private. I took a look at the ratings and I don't see a pattern of anyone "drive=by" rating.

The best thing to do is not even look at the ratings...look at your download count. That is a better indicator on how your walls are doing. Personally I very rarely look at ratings and only once in awhile at the download counts because I do this for fun and to pass the time. Once I upload something I more or less set if free...clear my folders and move on to the next project. Ratings mean nothing.

If you pay attention to the ratings and downloads too much you are missing the point of what you are doing and then it becomes a sort of competition. I never complain about a rating or how many downloads I get. Don't worry about it. You have to ask yourself if what you are creating satisfies your own vision and if it does that's all you need.

I understand what you're all saying, and I didn't write this just for myself. I've read other peoples remarks and they are shocked at the ratings they've received. I guess I should have handled this privately, but it wasn't just for my sake. Thanks for the input, it is appreciated!

Personally I don't rate anything unless I download it and I don't download anything I don't like the look of. So when I rate something it tends to be on the up side.

Art is subjective to the beholder. I would not read into the ratings too much.

Continue to produce interesting works and I will continue to download them.

Jazzi, I love your work, but I know what you mean. Sometimes it's hard not to look at those pesky stars! But I go more by download numbers AND comments. Most comments are very nice, because I think it's human nature to want to say when you really like something. Of course, I've gotten a couple where they told me how much they DIDN'T like it......not downloading it would have been sufficient, thank you!

Personally I wish they would get rid of ratings entirely because of issues like this.  Jazzi, your work is excellent, you know it and we all know it, so forget about the ratings, they don't mean a thing.

I rate what I like and sometimes rate what I do not like, normally if I do not like it I just do not comment on it nor do I rate it. However a low rating is given with the criticism as to why I did not like it. I very rarely give 5 stars as that indicates perfection. I usually like most of the work by the lovely lady who started this thread. Rating can only be done by subscribers it is part of one of the reasons I pay for a yearly subscription. I agree if someone gives a low rating they should have the cojenes  to say what they did not like about it. There is nothing wrong with the rating system. We all have likes and dislikes and should not be afraid too express them on this board. The rating system was not designed to be a mutual admiration site.

I also looked....in 8 days you've put up 15 walls(unless I miss counted) ratings from 2 stars to 3 1/2 stars(4-7 under the old system).

Wow..that's a lot in 8 days. I guess walls really aren't that hard to do then. It usually takes me that long to do a theme...but I "try" to be picky and if it's not coming out the way I think it should I put it aside and come back to it later.

Skins are certainly a lot harder to create than walls! I'm sorry to the Mods that I posted this here, I shouldn't have! As I said before though, this wasn't just about me. Thanks to all of you for your validations of my work, that wasn't my point though. However, I do appreciate them very much! After all, I'm only human! I think Lightstar has the right idea! Can the ratings!

Just a suggestion- the more walls you put up that look like others, or are similar to what you have already submitted, the more likely people will rate them low.

However, there is nothing indicating foul play with your ratings, or the other person that I saw complaining.  Most ratings (good or bad) don't match up with comments.  It's just the way it is.  If you are uploading only to get good ratings, slow down and perfect several walls a week instead of throwing them all out and seeing what sticks.  Otherwise, get used to seeing the mixed bag of reviews that you get since it's only natural.

I don't have to worry about my walls getting rated down. They go there naturally. lol
