Maybe you should update from ie8? Or use a different browser?

As you can see from my last post on the link you provided. I updated from ie9 to ie10 in hopes I would get rid of it and still get it. BUT, only in the WC forums. I just use Chrome now. Never ever got it on any other site.

Want to see something try this. Use chrome or I guess Firefox and it won't happen. Look at the source code all is well. Use IE go to the forum. Have that pop up, now look at the source code. You will see it in there.

Like I said above, I switched to chrome and now use to it with no pop up. Sometimes I understand it's not always to switch but sometimes you have to. Sure not worth getting pissed or upset about as this subject has been mentioned more times than just the above listed post. There was never any real reply back on this problem as what to do or the cause. The most important thing to me is making sure I wake up every morning.

yea, yea, standard answer but here's the thing, I use IE8 because it does not support html5 and I can disable flash. I really hate being notified that I have won some prize with the flashing red/yellow banner/fonts. I keep searching on how to disable html5 video but alas...

Does anyone know how to disable the video portion of html5???

under advanced settings, content settings set plugins to "click to play".

as extensions install AdBlock (=/= AdBlockPlus), Ghostery, Disconnect, DoNotTrackMe and Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on (by Google).

you'll be surprised how clean the Internet looks all of a sudden.

if due to recent events you longer trust US companies in terms of privacy (but then you use IE), use the Yandex browser. it's built on Chromium, so all the mentioned settings and extensions will work as well.

the only thing you gain from using IE 8 is a higher chance to get hit by malware and exploits.

not true, this depends on how the browser is configured. I find IE8 very dependable using user controls. Unfortunatley, the companies are forcing us users to upgrade regardless of our preferences. I'll hold on as long as I can.

And Moshi, thanks for the other advice. Will the "click to play" switch stop all video content, including ads?

I run IE 9 and I can remember only a couple of time getting the browser out of date notice.  I don't think that I have seen it in several months.  I don't have mulitply browsers on my system so no way of testing and no I don't want to download another browser to test. 

I don't run any extra 'stuff' on my browser and the only thing that I can point to that may have corrected the problem is running a small program that I believe possibly Doc did a thread about.  Here is a link through Major Geeks for it.  http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/junkware_removal_tool.html

Now I'm not saying that this cleared things up and stopped the notice from showing, I'm not that smart, but it may have.  Give it a look, you don't have to run it if you don't want to.

I didn't bother telling you that as it would be "standard" as well as...correct.

The answer IS you are using an outdated version of ie which is insecure...so, the notification you're getting is a correct one.

All this back and forth for a flashing banner on some site? Add NoScript for ie8...if it's still around. That won't fix the security holes in ie8, though.

Gosh Doc, that was the first thing that I disabled, is there something else that I'm missing.

I've been running malware and avg on a regular basis and have found NO (meaning NONE) instances of problems.

first of all if you install the AdBlock and Ghostery extensions from the Chrome Store (they are both free and you do not need an account), you will no longer see many ads at all, if any.

"click to play" means that, when a plugin is required, for an embedded Flash Youtube video for example, it will not be executed and you'll see a grey square with a plugin symbol instead. it will get executed when you click it. that has nothing to do with whether the content is an ad or not. blocking ads is the job of the extensions above. they do that. 

actually that was with FF. I do try different browsers to see what is the current offering. With flash disabled in IE8 I get no ads or instant video.

and just to comment, I have no add-ons with ie8. ie8 meets the kiss principle in spades.

guess that means that it does not effect html5 video content?

"click to play", again, is about plugins. 

if you don't want to see ads, use ad blockers. as they block these ads, it does not even matter whether those are Flash, MP4, Silverlight or Ogg. they get blocked, you will have nothing to click on for "click to play".

as i use ad blockers, i do not even have an idea how these evil, blinking HTML5 banner ads, you are talking about, look like.

for me using an outdated browser is like driving without a seat belt. most people never need one in their whole life. it still is stupid. your anti-malware tools (even if you run dozens of them) are the equivalent of the first aid box.

I would make a guess that if many more people used IE you would have many more post. From all the years on WC it's pretty clear that some but not many use IE. Like I said. I was forced to switch to another browser and decided on Chrome. It isn't really bad. I still use IE sometimes but just can't use it on the WC forums. Always a work around and for me it was Chrome.

I'm using IE8 on XP and don't get this at all. If I use Avant browser (IE based) on XP, I do. If I use IE10 on Win7, I do.  I decided to just stick with IE 9 on Win7, IE 10 is a fail that belongs on Win8, imho.

It is almost as if they are getting paid to push other browsers.

How's about WC just stop being Browser Police???  I am perfectly capable of making my own security decisions and choosing what and when to update.

If this is happening on other sites, I am not aware of it. I only get it on WC.

Outdated browsers cause problems with sites, which in turn costs time in support which could be going to other more important things.  

I'm running a totally up to date IE9 and have seen this popup at other sites.

Haven't seen it in a while now, I have all popups blocked.

If you look at the pop up, it does list IE8+ as recommended.
